    Review

Check out this interview on Artribune to the architect Filippo Caprioglio, who is in charge of the restoration project at Spazio Berlendis.

About

Spazio Berlendis is a space devoted to art in its countless forms and variations. The project to restore it in 2019 is owed to the determination of Emanuela Fadalti and Matilde Cadenti, former founders of Marignana Arte gallery, ever active in art and architecture in Venice.
With its glowing 300 sqm, exceptional heights, light from above, and accessibility also from the Rio dei Mendicanti through the water gateway, Spazio Berlendis is a fascinating place owing to its situation and configuration.
Careful restoration, while respecting its original structure, has endowed the place with a strong sense of contemporaneity, and thanks to its technical-layout features, vast exhibition capacity, and predisposition for different typologies of installations, has turned it into a special and prominent destination in the city of Venice, ideal for hosting events of various tendencies (exhibitions, concerts, conferences, artist residencies and more).
Spazio Berlendis is situated in the sestiere of Cannaregio, next to the Fondamente Nuove and a few steps from the Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo; it arises from the restoration of the former carpentry of the Squero Fassi (Fassi Shipyard) (known as Squero Vecio, the Old Squero), the oldest one in Venice (download the brochure).

In the past the city had many squeri, small shipyards where typical Venetian boats like gondolas, pupparini and sandoli were built and repaired.
The connection between Art and this place goes back to the 18th century: the Squero Vecio was immortalized by several artists including Canaletto and Guardi.
The name Berlendis comes from the adjacent courtyard, in turn named after the Palazzo Berlendis, characterized by its neo-Classical style and that can be attributed to the Venetian architect Andrea Tirali. Among others, Friedrich Nietzsche resided in this palace during his first visit to the city in 1880, and could enjoy the extraordinary view on the North Laguna and the belltower of San Marco.
